Tepsi: A culinary oasis in Watford

In the bustling heart of Watford, where chain cafes and chicken shops are multiplying faster than hipsters at a cold brew convention, Tepsi, with its ethos of ‘minimalistic, healthy and fresh’ is a beacon for those craving authenticity over assembly lines.

First impressions

Nestled on St Albans Road, in what once was home to a Chinese Takeaway, Tepsi’s exterior is unassuming, but step inside there’s no longer a prawn cracker in sight.

Instead you’re greeted with an ambiance unlike anywhere else in the town, or the county for that matter.

A monument to creative charm, the decor mixes modern and reclaimed. Typographic artwork, thoughtfully curated and baring slogans like ‘Music is what feelings sound like’ overlooks velvet couches and benches made from floorboards, altogether, striking a harmonious balance between chic and cosy that makes it equally suitable for a casual brunch or a romantic rendezvous.

The brew and chew

Tepsi takes its food and drink seriously.

Thanks to its Turkish, Bosnian and Spanish influences, and the expertise of the owner – more on that later – the everything offered is far from the usual fare.

A testament to thoughtful curation its food menu features everything from pistachio filled cube shaped croissants from local baker Crome, to butternut squash walnut tarts and traditional Turkish boat shaped ‘Pide’ Pizzas in flavours like Smoked Aubergine and Pine Nut. And in an ode to perfectionism, Tepsi does not stop there, sealing the deal with the addition of unmistakably fresh salads and dips.

In essence; there’s something for even the most discerning palate, and any time of day, whether you’re a meat seeker, vegetarian or staunch vegan.

The drinks offer doesn’t let the side down either. On the tea front, there are more than 15 loose leaf teas to sample including Ayurvedic Herbs and Ginger, Slow Brewed Turkish Black and the incredible Vanlla Rooibos.

Not a tea person? No problem, as alongside the usual coffee shop treats like frappes and smoothies, are a variety of experimental fresh juice blends featuring olive oil and honey, and even some non-alcoholic refreshers like Peach Iced Tea and Turkish Slow Brew with fresh mint and lemon juice.

But the jewel in Tepsi’s beverege crown is, without a doubt, their Tahini Latte, with your choice of molassess, date or grape syrup. The creamy, nutty, slightly savoury richness of the sesame paste makes this a drink that no self respecting foody should miss.

The maestro behind the magic

At the helm of this culinary haven is Gokhan Ozcan, a Turkish-born entrepreneur with a passion for bringing authentic flavours to the community. He describes Tepsi as the culmination of a life dedicated to food and drink thanks to a long career spanning production, procurement and mixology. And indeed, his vision and dedication are evident in every aspect from the meticulously curated menu to the warm, inviting atmosphere.

As is the case in many great companies, his expertise and passion seem to have been contagious with every staff member exuding a warmth that’s increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced world; attentive without being intrusive, doing whatever need to ensure your experience is both personal and pleasant.

The final sip

In a town where genuine cafe culture can sometimes feel overshadowed by corporate clones, Tepsi stands out as a refreshing anomaly. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s worth deviating from the beaten path to experience what this charming spot has to offer. And as they’ve just launched late night Fridays, when the lights are dimmed and romantic vibes are amplified, what better time to try them out.
